Elden Ring players are doing reverse farming AFK PvPers

Normally, if you want to farm runes to level up in Elden ring (opens in new tab), you’ll take out a dozen enemies repeatedly until you’re satisfied. Turns out this is too much for some players who prefer not to press any buttons to get runes. These players are crouching in impossible-to-reach spots in the world and luring invaders to get easy runes while having alternate tabs or completely AFK.

It’s a bad rune farm compared to the ones that don’t waste other people’s time (opens in new tab). AFK Rune Farmers use Torrent to jump to places you can’t get to on foot (usually in Limgrave) and then using the Taunter’s tongue to lure enemy players. No one can use the horse in multiplayer, so enemy invaders cannot reach the AFK rune farmer by normal means. These players are betting on the PvP invader’s confusion or frustration for a reward.

If invaders don’t use the Finger Severer (which also rewards a small amount of runes to the host) to escape the AFK host’s world and instead jump off a cliff and die, the camper receives a runes based amount at the enemy player’s level. And they get more runes if they use the White Cipher Ring to summon allied players to defeat the invaders for them.

This ongoing exploration has brought together smart Elden Ring players to start coming up with ways to ‘reverse farm’ the AFK rune farmers. Popular methods include ranged weapons like the Jar Cannon (opens in new tab) to kill or knock AFK players off their perches, or stalled animations on spells like Flame of Agheel (opens in new tab) to catch them from afar. some players (opens in new tab)are even forming a truce with AFK players’ ally hunters to locate the culprit so the invader can try to stop them from capturing future players in their scheme.

YouTube videos (opens in new tab) that explain this method of growing runes are being inundated with comments from people on how to combat this technique and people’s irritation with it being explained in the first place.

I can’t help but agree with witcher’s comment (opens in new tab) in one such video, who simply wrote, “This is the most maidenly behavior I’ve ever seen”. I’m all for making the game more manageable for you by cultivating levels, but don’t do it at the expense of other people’s time. AFK Rune Farmers deserve to be cultivated.
