Elden Ring’s speedrunners were forced to fight over a new strategy when the game 1.03 patch hit last week. This update heavily nerfed several speedrunning crutches used by the record-breaking Distortion2, which naturally led to a race to find better ways to break the game. Elden Ring players may have already found an answer: make the horse fly.
It is difficult to track exactly who discovered the flaw first, but the first video March 17 date. Here’s how it works: In certain areas of the map, you need to unmount the Torrent immediately before letting it dive to its death. Then, when you spawn the horse again, it can run across the sky, like a pegasus.
That makes it look easy. Apparently it’s a pretty hard glitch to make and can only be made in specific areas of the map. The video above shows a “launch point” outside Volcano Manor, but it’s also possible in Mountaintop of Giants. Distortion2 has done this in Capital Outskirts.
In Distortion2’s Streaming from Twitch, a lot of experimentation is going on, but it’s still unclear whether the flying horse glitch will offer any tangible benefits to speedrunners (not to mention the fact that this will likely be fixed as soon as FromSoftware gives notice). It’s possible to gallop under most of the Leyndell Royal Capital, but safely emerging back onto the map seems like the next hurdle to overcome. “Right now, I don’t know if doing this is going to be any faster than just going through this place normally,” Distortion2 said on the broadcast.
The glitch also provides access to some interiors using Torrent, though how this will be useful, again, is yet to be established. Whatever the case, it may not be long before the old sub-30 minutes Elden Ring Speed Run can be combined in the new version 1.03 of the game.
