In D&D, gnomes are objectively the best. They’re like halflings with more personality and less gross feet. Thank goodness then, they will definitely be playable in Baldur’s Gate 3 eventually.
As gnomes can be played in the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale series, safe money was with them showing up in Baldur’s Gate 3 as well, but so far Larian hasn’t given much away – other than confirming that the Early Access version doesn’t contain the entirety of the races. playable.
This made fans of stocky illusionists (his favorite class) sad, even though a kind soul created a mod that added them. But thanks to what may have been a slight slip during a GDC 2022 keynote by Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, we now know the gnomes are coming for sure.
Talking about the diversity of body shapes and the difficulty of implementing different physiques in games with a wide range of fantasy races, it seems Vincke briefly forgot that gnomes were still on the unannounced list.
“This game supports a lot of player races, right? And I’m going to give you some examples of problems we have to deal with. You can play as a human and you can play as a gnome…”
But, of course, you can’t play as a gnome. With the cat out of the bag, Vincke continued. “The gnomes aren’t there, so that’s your scoop for today.” If someone is going to accidentally announce something to the press, I think the CEO is the least likely to be reprimanded.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t ready to share any details about them, their subraces, or when they might appear. It could be during Early Access, but it’s just as possible that we’ll have to wait until launch. Given that they already exist in D&D, however, we can make some assumptions about their stats from the Official page.
