Kickstarter CEO Quits But Claims It Has Nothing To Do With Blockchain Reaction

Aziz Hasan, CEO of Kickstarter, is stepping down after three years. announced his departure in a blog post on the website, reflecting on his time with the company and saying he was “very proud” of the “passionate, skilled and dedicated team”.

“To our team, the supporters, the creators, this entire community – you are what makes Kickstarter the creative and amazing place it is,” he continued. “Often beautiful, sometimes unusual and always inspiring. I end my tenure here with great gratitude and a much deeper personal connection to how powerful and impactful creative projects are in the world.” He said Fast Company this “personal reflection” is the reason he is bidding farewell to Kickstarter on April 4, wanting to spend more time with his wife and two young children.

Hasan leaves Kickstarter behind in an awkward position. At the end of 2021, the company announced that it intended to place itself in the blockchain. the follow-up blog post it was an unfortunate attachment to straws – like most things that try to explain shitty concepts – and was later derided on the internet. Supporters hated it, creators hated it, virtually no one seemed to be a fan except Kickstarter itself. Shortly thereafter, he halted the plans half-heartedly, but made it clear that his general stance was not changing.

Those plans are still in place, Hasan told Fast Company, although “Kickstarter as it exists today is not on the blockchain.” But they are happening at some point eventually, whether people like it or not. “We’re going to work so that people can see it,” he continued.

The company was also heavily criticized under Hasan’s leadership for its anti-union practices, such as vice reported. It refused to voluntarily recognize its employee union and had to settle a lawsuit in 2020 related to the firing of a key player in the union’s efforts. Kickstarter employees ended up voting to form a union in early 2020, becoming the first tech company to do so.

Chief Operating Officer Sean Leow will serve as interim CEO while the search for a replacement is underway, which Hasan is assisting with as a consultant to the company.
