There are a lot of video games about giant robots fighting, but that doesn’t mean there are enough. If you agree, you can be glad that Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2a PlayStation exclusive, will be released on Steam “soon”.
Don’t get your hopes up though, because Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 is a free-to-play game, featuring 6v6 robot battles in the usual set of war-torn futuristic settings. In addition to the giant robots, this ride also lets you break out of mechas and fight infantry-style, which sounds dangerous, but according to the game’s Steam page could be “the key to victory on the battlefield.”
Be aware that it is chock full of monetization schemes. Things may have changed since launch, but the few reviews that exist point to them being murky and difficult. You can buy new mechs with real-world money, or you can purchase them with in-game currency through loot boxes or directly. italian outlet multiplayer.it describes it as a “giant-sized mobile gacha”, but praises its dedication to the Mobile Suit fantasy.
Gacha mechanics are the sort of thing Mobile Suit Gundam fanatics are likely to struggle with to get a modern game that stays true to the anime vibe. Unlike the console version, mouse and keyboard are supported, although no support for cross-play or cross-save is available at launch.
If you want to get in early, a network test will start on Thursday, April 14th. Full details on this are at Steam. The original PS4 launch trailer is below.
