Robocop – the original, good – comes to Fortnite

Robocop, the horrific cyborg creation of a ravenous megacorporation seeking to impose its will on the diseased and crumbling remains of a capitalist empire, is the latest pop culture icon to pave the way for Fortnite.

Available now in the Fortnite Item Shop, this violent and inhuman tool of bloated corporate overlords comes armed with the leg (clever pun there) of ED-209, the pre-Robocop law enforcement machine that was a little too efficient at its job. The LEG-209 serves as a Back Bling for the Robocop outfit, and also serves as a pickaxe. Both are included in the Robocop Bundle, along with the Lil’ ED-209 emote.

My initial reaction to Robocop in Fortnite is that it’s a strange addition. Robocop, after all, was a scathing critique of corporatism, capitalism, systemic corruption, and the slow-motion failure of modern society, while Fortnite is more akin to an interactive embrace of all the pop culture phenomena under the sun – not too obvious. cross compatibility there. I also feel like it’s a little outdated for Fortnite audiences: after all, the original Robocop was released in 1987.

On the other hand, it’s been pointed out to me that everything that’s edgy ends up being sold to us like toys by the same corporations they once criticized — and Robocop director Paul Verhoeven would probably have fun with the whole thing anyway.

Ultimately, Fortnite is a full-fledged, free-to-play crossover – recent additions to the game include Assassin’s Creed, Doctor who, Naomi Osakaand the X-Men – and I remembered as I wrote this that the Terminatorwho once ripped a man’s heart out of his chest so he could get his jacket, entered the game in January 2021. So I guess the addition of Robocop isn’t so off-limits after all.

Robocop is now available on the Fortnite Item Store. This is what it looks like.
