Spice should flow in Dune in April

Dune: Spice War is the first Dune RTS in 23 years: and it will be here very soon. Released in Early Access on April 26, the game is based on the novel by Frank Herbert, although it takes some inspiration from the recent film version by Denis Villenueve. If you’re not familiar with the material, let me tell you: it involves spice wars.

Along with the release date, the game’s fourth playable faction was revealed: the Fremen. They are more comfortable in inhospitable desert environments, are less likely to attract the dreaded sandworms, and can more easily form alliances with factions of NPCs scattered across the landscape. The faction is designed as a guerrilla army as opposed to imperium, essentially, and their playstyle involves rallying the other disparate inhabitants of Arrakis against the invaders.

“With so many massive Dune fans in the studio, the excitement I see every day working with this universe is very real, and we hope it shows in the game,” says Sebastien Vidal, CEO of Shiro Games. “With all that passion for the source material and all the know-how we’ve gathered in making Northgard, we can’t wait to get this game into the hands of gamers.”

There’s one more faction after the game’s release, but we’ll be able to tell you soon if it was worth the wait (looked pretty good in a recent preview version (opens in new tab)). In addition to Dune: Spice Wars, publisher Funcom is also developing a multiplayer open-world survival game set in the Dune universe, though nothing is known about that yet.
