System Shock 2 Redux helps improve SHODAN

It is considered one of the best games ever made (opens in new tab)but even your most ardent fan would agree that System Shock 2 (opens in new tab) was never a spectator. At launch, her flat textures and lumpen character models lagged behind the Unreals and Quake IIIs, and these days her face is one that only a psychotic AI mom could love. Fortunately, running into Von Braun with a syringe full of Botulinum is System Shock 2 Redux (opens in new tab)a collection of the best cosmetic mods for the iconic immersive simulator of Looking Glass.

System Shock 2 Redux leaves virtually no game surface untouched. Mods in the package include Review of Flora of Vurt (opens in new tab)which adds extra leaves and flowers to the game’s plant life, while Complete Tactical (opens in new tab) adds high resolution weapon models to the game. One of the biggest mods out there is Four hundred (opens in new tab)which completely overhauls the textures of the game world, adding microscopic details such as ensuring that the ceiling pipes in the engineering deck have realistic directional flow.

Other cosmetic mods in the pack upgrade enemies, your psi arm, and all the gross biological matter scattered around the ship by the squidgy Hivemind known as The Many. It doesn’t just provide a visual makeover either. Old music remake (opens in new tab) brings higher quality music (and System Shock 2’s music was already very popular), while DeepFriedBeer Sound Update (opens in new tab) improves audio effects on weapons and in-game objects such as keyboards.

The reason for this collection of mods, according to its Gorth84 compiler, is twofold. First, it’s “easier to load a mod file”. Additionally, the mod is intended to reflect Nightdive Studios’ planned enhanced edition of System Shock, which, according to Gorth84, will use all mods in the Redux collection.

You can download System Shock 2 Redux on here (opens in new tab). Installation instructions can be found below the download button. If you want to wait for the official Nightdive Enhanced Edition of System Shock 2, the System Shock remake it will ship with is “very complete” (opens in new tab) and should release soon.
