Starfield is apparently still coming later this year! The gears in the hype machine have been slowly turning for months now, though sadly with not much beyond several dev videos talking in his head (opens in new tab). Today, however, comes something more interesting – a ‘behind the scenes’ video showing the first teammate we saw, Vasco.
Vasco is the expeditionary robot of the Constellation faction. Essentially, he’s an industrial machine with personality – not much of it is shown here – and his role seems to be almost more of a practical assistant than a companion.
Starfield lead artist Istvan Pely describes the Vasco as: “an early model built by lunar robotics, the Vasco was repurposed to fulfill the Constellation mission. It is a utilitarian heavy industrial machine suited to the rigors of space travel.”
Vasco’s role for the player is heavily implied in this trailer without ever being directly stated. One piece of concept art shows him fixing the underside of a ship, while in other spots his strengths are emphasized such as traversing rough terrain and carrying lots of stuff on long voyages. The robot has weapons, but these are defensive in nature, its main role is ‘peaceful’, and the press synopsis describes it as ‘trustworthy’ – so basically Vasco will be your space donkey.
The whole ‘companion’ thing is interesting with Starfield: the tendency is to think they’ll work the same way they do in something like Fallout, where you basically run one at a time and progress through the story. But if you’re going to be scouring the stars on a big ship, maybe you’ll take them with you and exchange them: Vasco is clearly going to be very useful on hunts, but you think (and hope! ) there are more striking personalities out there for different scenarios. .
Starfield is due for release on November 11, 2022: here’s everything we know about it.
